Individualizing Tutoring with Learning Style Based Feedback

چکیده
In openstructured domains such as objectoriented design, feedback cannot be standardized error messages or the solution to the problem. To attain the success of effective human tutors, these systems should adapt to a student's learning style. We introduce a pedagogical framework that incorporates the FelderSilverman learning style model and their validated instrument for assessing individual learning style. The framework provides a feedback infrastructure based on the learning style model dimensions (such as visual, verbal, intuitive, sensor, etc.). It has been implemented as part of the DesignFirstITS, helping novices learn how to design a class in UML from a problem description. The system has been evaluated in a CS1 class with results that show that students found the learningstyles based feedback effective in helping them identify and correct errors so that all were able to complete a nontrivial problem.

Learning from human tutoring
Human one-to-one tutoring has been shown to be a very effective form of instruction. Three contrasting hypotheses, a tutor-centered one, a student-centered one, and an interactive one could all potentially explain the effectiveness of tutoring. To test these hypotheses, analyses focused not only on the effectiveness of the tutors’ moves, but also on the effectiveness of the students’ constructi...

متن کاملContent, Social, and Metacognitive Statements: An Empirical Study Comparing Human-Human and Human-Computer Tutorial Dialogue
We present a study which compares human-human computermediated tutoring with two computer tutoring systems based on the same materials but differing in the type of feedback they provide. Our results show that there are significant differences in interaction style between human-human and human-computer tutoring, as well as between the two computer tutors, and that different dialogue characterist...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Frequency of Oral Corrective Feedback and Identity Processing Style among Iranian EFL Teachers
is believed that identity has great[s1] impact on almost every aspect of human psychological and social growth. Oral corrective feedback, on the other hand, is found to have a profound influence on learning. In this regard, this study attempted to examine any probable relationship between identity processing styles and the frequency of oral corrective feedback techniques. The participants inclu...

Personalization needs to identify the learners’ preferences and their characteristics as an important part in any e-learning environment which without identify learners’ mental characteristics and their learning approaches, personalization cannot be possible. Whatever this identifying process has been done more completely and more accurately, the learner model that based on it will be more reli...
